SWFL Eagles ~ F23 Brings A Fish To Nest! M15 STEALS A Fish HOT! The HERD Swimming At Pond 🐴 5.10.24

I would like to wish all our Mom's a Happy Mother's Day today!

The video opens with coverage of one of the adults over across the street on the Norfolk pine early in the morning. Then a little while later, M15 is seen flying over the pond to the office oak. M15 has a missing tail feather on his left side - you can see it in the photo I attached. This is no cause for alarm, M15 is molting and naturally will lose some of his tail feathers. All birds go through a process of losing feathers and this is called a molt. The feathers do suffer regular wear and tear so, ultimately, the quality of the feather will decrease and it will need to be replaced. The feathers are not lost all at the same time. If this were true, eagle would be unprotected from natural elements and more importantly it would not be able to fly or hunt and would starve to death.

Eagles molt in a symmetrical pattern. If a primary feather is molted on the left wing, the same feather is molted simultaneously on the right wing. Bald eagles have 12 tail feathers and a tail molt usually is symmetrical, starting with the central pair of feathers and moving outwards. By the time Fall rolls around, M15 should have new replacement feathers grown in.

At the pond, we see the HERD gathering around the pasture - two horses swimming and taking a cooling dip and three horses grazing on the grass. F23 will fly in to the nest with a fish and she will eat it as shrikes pester. When she is finished she heads to the pond for sips - and M15 will fly across the pond. She will head to the office oak and M15 will join her.

M15 will leave the office oak and dives down just out of view and then he comes back with a fish - did he catch it or steal it from the Anhinga? Inquiring minds want to know! 🐟

At the end of the day, M15 returns to the nest and the shrikes are terrible and dive bomb him continually. He vocalizes at them and then just flies off for the night and heads to the south/east. There is no sign of E23 and we all wish E23 now a safe journey and long life! ♥ Thank you for watching!
