Loch Ness is the easternmost and largest of the three elongated freshwater lochs in the Great Glen, which cuts completely through the Scottish Highlands from the Scotch Sea to the North Sea in a straight northeastward line. From its upper end with the River Oich tributary at Fort Augustus, approximately in the middle of the Great Glen, Loch Ness extends northeastward for 36 kilometers to its outlet into the River Ness at Lochend, eleven kilometers southwest of the coast at Inverness. Measured by the water surface of 56.4 km², Loch Ness is the second largest lake in Scotland after Loch Lomond. Due to its depth, it has the largest water volume of all Scottish lochs.
Urquhart Castle is a ruined castle located on Loch Ness. The nearest town is Drumnadrochit, about 2.7 km away. Once one of the largest castles in Scotland, Urquhart was the scene of numerous conflicts during its 500-year history as a medieval fortress. During the Wars of Independence, control of the castle alternated back and forth between the Scots and the English. Power struggles continued, and the Lords of the Isles regularly raided the castle and valley until the 1500s. The last government troops stationed here during the Jacobite Rebellion blew up the castle when they left. The iconic ruins of Urquhart remain, offering glimpses of the Middle Ages and the lives of its noble inhabitants.
