Broadcaster Neil Oliver: We need to bring work back into the communities

Archaeologist and TV presenter Neil Oliver has called for a renewed focus on practical apprenticeships over university study in order to “bring work back into the communities”.

Speaking with talkRADIO’s Mike Graham, the broadcaster said that creative and productive working “makes us feel that we matter”.

“Our intelligence is not just limited to our brains and our heads, it’s distributed through our bodies.

“I think it would be far more beneficial to many people raise the status of and the importance of proper full-time apprenticeships of the sort that we used to have.”

Mr Oliver went on to champion the value of learning a skill or a trade.

“I would look forward to a time when people weren’t just being excited about the idea of getting to university but that people would thrilled and excited about the opportunity to get into building cars, building ships, making steel, creating all of the scaffolding that holds up our civilisation.”
