Often times the muscles that attach the legs to the pelvis aren't recruited or asked to contract in the right order. Due to which force transmission through the pelvis can be disrupted leading to instability of the hips and spine. This can happen when we try to stabilize our posture or when we walk and move. People with this common movement distortion usually can be seen with knees that knock inward and feet that rotate out.

As the piriformis is a lateral rotator the action of the leg rotating inward can cause the piriformis to have to work overtime to stabilize the leg. This can cause the piriformis to become tight or spasm. As the sciatic nerve runs very close to the piriformis, if the muscle becomes tight it can become compressed and cause pain which can radiate down the leg. That's why in this segment we are going to show you how to release the piriformis, activate the muscles which help to alleviate the pressure and integrate movement which will help to train the brain how to get the muscles to fire the right way.

"10 MINUTE
WORKOUT OF THE WEEK | Piriformis and Asymmetrical Weight Shift"
"Overview
Todays Focus: Piriformis and Asymmetrical Weight Shift
Goal: Injury prevention, alignment, stability, strength
Time Commitment:
Prevent & Inhibit: 1min
Prevent & lengthen: 1min
Align & Activate: 1 min
Integrate & Move: 1 min
Integrate & Strengthen: 1 min of both sides of the body

Complete each circuit on both sides of the body."
"PREVENT & INHIBIT
This is a self-myofascial release of the piriformis a lacrosse ball"
"SIDE CARD - SEG 2
Why: Tight piriformis impact lumbopelvic hip stability
Benefit: Reducing the tension in the piriformis will aid in establishing neuro muscular control of the lumbopelvic hip system"
"PREVENT & LENGTHEN
This is a neuromuscular stretch of the piriformis using just body weight"
"SIDE CARD -
Why: Shortened piriformis disrupt the efficiency of the lumbopelvic hip system in transmitting forces and can reduce dynamic stabilization.
Benefit: Lengthening these muscles will help to establish the correct force couple relationships in the hips, legs, and spine. "
"ALIGN & ACTIVATE
Activation of the adductor complex with a side lying adduction roll"
"SIDE CARD -
Why: Weakened anterior serratus lead to protracted and elevated shoulders
Benefit: Increased glenohumeral stability - decreasing the potential for impingement and shoulder dysfunction"
"INTEGRATE & MOVE
Integrated strength of the pelvis and legs using a single leg balance "
"SIDE CARD -
Why: Coordinating the activation of hip and leg stabilizers will increase neuromuscular efficiency
Benefit: Appropriate muscle contraction patterns sequenced at the right time are essential to optimum performance and stability"
"INTEGRATE & STRENGTHEN
Strengthen the lateral sling system using a lateral lunge"
"SIDE CARD -
Why: It's important to target the lateral stabilizers by incorporating a direct strength position to target them in a lateral plane of movement
Benefit: This will teach you how to recruit the medial and lateral stabilizers of the femur (thigh bone) and pelvis in the right order to create functional strength"
