Drum Sander vs Wide Belt Sander Comparison
Drum Sander vs. Wide Belt Sander?
Knowing which woodworking tools to purchase can be a difficult decision to make. When it comes to thickness sanders, which one do you need. Should you get a drum sander, or upgrade to a wide belt sander? What is the difference? Most small woodworking shop owners choose to get a drum sander when they purchase their first thickness sander. But, is that really a good choice. In this video we will look at a drum sander and a thickness sander with similar sanding size capacities and discover that there really is significant difference between the two when it comes to what matters most: THE QUALITY OF THE FINISH. Today I am comparing a Powermax 16-32 Drum sander and a Grizzly G9883 15” Wide Belt Sander and look at the similarities and differences between the two. Neither of these machines are the latest models, but the proved a great comparison to guide us on purchase that we will make today.
And, in my experience, there is a clear winner between the two. SO MUCH SO, that I would actually recommend NOT PURCHASING A DRUM SANDER and saving your money towards a wide belt sander that is in your price range. YES, THE DIFFERENCE IS THAT GREAT. If your budget just cannot swing a wide belt sander, my suggestion would be choose another option, other than a drum sander, to meet your sanding needs. One great option would be to purchase a good quality 6” two action random orbital sander. Bosch makes an amazing sander that has two different modes: an aggressive mode for removing a lot of stock and t traditional random orbital mode for fine finishing. I have the 1250DEVS which had been discontinued and replaced with the GET75-6N. I have found that this sander is so fast that it can beat the drum sander in speed and quality. The Festool Rotex 150 sander is also a great choice and similar to the Bosh in many ways. It is more expensive but worth checking out. Besides the random orbital sanders, it also will be worth your while to get better at using certain hand tools. Being proficient with a scraper will allow you to deal with that wacky grain, like curly maple, that can cause so much difficulty. Also, being able to properly sharpen and use a hand plain likewise can lessen your need for a thickness sander. Finally, moving up to a spiral cutter head on your planer can also eliminate you need to purchase a thickness sander.
