Valmiki Tiger Reserve, located in the West Champaran district of Bihar, India, is the state's only tiger reserve. Situated along the India-Nepal border, it marks the easternmost extent of the Himalayan Terai forests in the country. The reserve spans approximately 880 square kilometers, encompassing the Valmiki National Park and the Valmiki Wildlife Sanctuary.

Geographical Features: The terrain of Valmiki Tiger Reserve is characterized by a combination of Bhabar and Terai tracts, featuring diverse landscapes of dense forests, alluvial grasslands, and riverine ecosystems. Several rivers, including the Gandak, Pandai, Manor, Harha, Masan, and Bhapsa, traverse various parts of the reserve, enriching its biodiversity.

Flora: The reserve boasts a rich variety of vegetation types, such as moist mixed deciduous forests, semi-evergreen formations, freshwater swamps, riparian fringes, and alluvial grasslands. Prominent tree species include sal (Shorea robusta), karam (Adina cordifolia), asan (Terminalia tomentosa), and bahera (Terminalia bellirica). Notably, the reserve also harbors cane brakes and a small isolated patch of chir pine (Pinus roxburghii) in the Raghia Forest block.

Fauna: Valmiki Tiger Reserve is home to a diverse array of wildlife. It hosts the Bengal tiger, Indian rhinoceros, Asian elephant, Asiatic black bear, and sloth bear. Other mammals include leopards, Indian bison, hyenas, wild dogs, and various deer species such as barking deer, spotted deer, hog deer, sambar, and blue bull. The reserve also shelters numerous reptile species, including pythons, king cobras, banded kraits, and sand boas, with gharials inhabiting the Gandak River. Bird enthusiasts can find over 240 species, such as the kalij pheasant, Oriental pied hornbill, emerald dove, and various owls and nightjars.

Conservation Significance: As Bihar's sole tiger reserve, Valmiki plays a crucial role in the conservation of the region's biodiversity. Its unique location along the Himalayan foothills contributes to a rich mix of species from both the Eastern and Western Himalayas, as well as neighboring Nepal. This makes it a vital area for preserving genetic diversity and supporting ecological research.
