Ron - A Documentary Short
Ron is the third documentary short in my profile series from 2009.
I met Ron while walking through Boston Common near Park Street. He was articulate, thoughtful, and generous with his time, and he agreed to sit for a short interview.
Because he was working, he agreed on the condition that I keep the interview under ten minutes. That made the conversation challenging. It usually takes time for an interview to open up, and it can be difficult to reach that deeper place when you only have a few minutes.
The edit was also difficult, but one of the most interesting moments came from footage I captured while the camera was still rolling between setups. For me, that conversation creates a small crack in the surface. It gives the viewer a brief glimpse of Ron’s real life, however ordinary or complicated it may be.
As a stand-alone piece, this short has a different feel and cadence from the first two films in the series. It is quieter, more observational, and in some ways more grounded. Within the larger series, Ron occupies an important space. If Pat and Gilbert feel like bookends, Ron’s interview feels like a breath of fresh air between them.
Filmed on a Sony EX1 with a Letus 35mm adapter and a Canon L-series 24–70mm f/2.8 lens. Color treated with Magic Bullet Looks.
