A Humanist Prayer

My brother, come sit beside me
and tell me of your pain.
Forgive me for my trespasses
as I forgive the same.

Big sister, I always loved you.
I didn’t always know.
Forgive me for my carelessness.
Thank God I told you so.

Tomorrow is a promise
that one day won’t be kept.
So tell your friends you love them, now.
You’ll never feel regret.

The Earth could be our Eden
or it could be our hell.
A godly gift, it’s up to us
to treat that future well.

Earth mother, restore my spirit.
So precious is your grace.
Forgive us for our trespasses
and heal your wounded face.

I hear such anger from so many people.
Oh, give that hate a rest.
Why not forgive our trespasses
and try for happiness?

My brother,
Big sister,
Earth mother.

This song is my wish that love and friendship could heal our wounded planet. It's also a tribute to my sister. After watching her suffer from Parkinson's disease for more than a decade, I would have some words with God about suffering in the world, if only He existed. But I'm agnostic, so this prayer is for humankind.
