Teaching Online-What I have learned from 2 months of madness-5 points #teachingOnline
This video goes through five things I have noticed in the last couple of months about teaching online. I base this on a number of classroom observations, teacher interviews and my own experience of working in an online context.
0:00 Teaching On-line -Introduction
02:28 On-line classes from Students point of view.
06:05 The learning ways
08:00 Best devices for online learning.
10:07 Thanks for watching
In this video I try to make 5 key points. Firstly that teaching online is much slower. Things seem to take much longer to do and you don't tend to get through as much content in an online lesson as you do in a face to face class. This is especially true in the live session using a tool like Zoom or WebEx. It takes longer in an online lesson for students to settle down, it takes longer to set up activities, it takes longer go around the breakout rooms.
Secondly students need to be much more involved in the learning process. This is a big challenge as we really need to help our students to be more autonomous and to engage both in the live session but also to work outside the lesson. To bring a live session together in Zoom we need the students to have prepared and done activities before the lesson. Almost like a Flipped Classroom type of approach. The students need to come to the lesson prepared, especially from about the age of 12 or 13. We need them to do that so that we can make the live sessions more engaging. This is going to be a big challenge and we are going to have to let some of the control of the lesson go.
The third point is that I don't feel that students are always naturally good with technology. I see them suffer from the same problems as adults. They are not experienced in this form of learning and it is a big change for them. They don't find it easy to naturally use technology for their learning. They might find it easy to use Zoom or Snapchat but that doesn't mean they find it easy to work with Zoom and learn how to share their screen etc. They have the same problems as teachers.
Another point I make is that often more of the learning takes place outside the live session. The platform we use to organize our students plays a massive role and it requires two things to really make an online class work. We need a webinar tool for the 'live' session and some sort of platform to organize the rest of the time the students are working. This might be something like Edmodo, Schoology, Google Classroom etc.
