Pearse Keane - the AI Eye Doctor

Dr Pearse Keane is a consultant ophthalmologist at London’s Moorfields Hospital and professor of artificial medical intelligence at the Institute of Ophthalmology at University College London. Here he's in conversation with Rory Cellan-Jones about his groundbreaking project with Google's DeepMind to use AI to assess eye scans. Since the unveiling in 2018 of an algorithm which could assess 50 eye conditions as accurately as top specialists, progress has been slow. But Keane is confident that within a couple of years this could be one of the first autonomous AI systems to be used to help millions of patients around the world.
