What makes a jazz dancer!? #solojazzdance

“In jazz we don’t push it, we let it fall” said Duke Ellington.
That phrase has to do a lot with musicality, the fact, that we accentuate the back beat (the 2) in music and in dance.
But not only…!

This quality of falling or as I call it at times, THE DROP directly applied to dance technique.
In order to achieve that “fall” and that ease, lightness yet rhythmical approach in body we actually need to RELEASE, relax, DROP the weight into the floor.

SURRENDER your weight to the floor. Let it receive it and help you bounce back. Floor is one of our dance partners in solo dance.

THE DROP is not only helpful for visualising the backbeat,
It’s in general the quality of your dancing Jazz Body.

Think about the drummers, bass players … physically to swing the note, you need to drop the hand with release.
Now, not soggy potato! But the sigh out.

GIVE YOUR WEIGHT to your dance partner - FLOOR
Don’t hold yourself afloat over the ground, SURRENDER.
