Hero Screen Hover Text and Tooltips Done Right | Heroes of Might and Magic Rebuild [Episode 50]

In this episode, we continue rebuilding Heroes of Might and Magic 1 from scratch, this time bringing the hero screen to life with proper hover text and tooltips. Starting from a near-bare hero screen where almost nothing responded to the mouse, we work through implementing tooltip boxes and info bar text for every interactive element — hero stats like attack, defense, spell power, knowledge, morale, and luck; creature slots; the spellbook; artifact slots; and the exit and dismiss buttons.
Along the way, we explore the challenges of decoding the original game's binary layout files, track down bugs like an off-center tooltip box, a newline character rendering issue, and the spellbook incorrectly displaying artifact tooltip text on left-click. We also build out an artifact info table to store tooltip and flavor text data, and discuss how morale and luck modifiers are calculated — from army faction alignment bonuses to map objects like angel statues, buoys, fountains, and fairy rings.
By the end of the session, the hero screen is looking very close to the original, with hover text and tooltips working correctly across nearly every interactive zone.
