Mega Man (Genesis) Playthrough - NintendoComplete

A playthrough of Mega Man as it appears in Capcom's 1994 compilation title for the Sega Genesis, Mega Man: The Wily Wars.

The Wily Wars was a compilation of the first three Megaman NES games, remade with a new 16-bit facelift. It was only released across the Sega Channel in the US, though it got a cartridge release in Japan and in Europe.

The US version is no longer accessible, unfortunately. The Sega Channel service has been defunct for a verrrry long time now, and the cartridges didn't hold their data once the console was turned off. It had to be downloaded over dial-up everytime you wanted to play it. And in 1994, over a then-standard 28.8k modem, this two-megabyte cart took an excruciatingly long time to load. That is, if you could even get the download finished before something booted you off the phone line. Remember how often that used to happen?

So, this recording is of the European version. The Euro version is identical to the US version, but it runs super-slowly in PAL. The cartridge also throws up an error if you plug it into an NTSC console, so the problem can't be fixed that way. I'm using a game that's been patched to run on any console - as a result, it is running at the NTSC standard (60hz) rather than the cart's default PAL (50hz) rate. It might not sound like a big difference, but anyone from Europe can tell you how excruciating a game can be when it's running 17% slower than it should, and with big borders to further add insult to injury. So long story short - this is how the US version played back in 1994.

The graphical upgrade is cool (the parallax in many stages looks really nice), the music remixes tend to be hit or miss. The controls are a bit more awkward, however, which messes the flow of the game up a bit, since the arm cannon is WAY slower to shoot now than it ever was, and there's a weird pause when you first begin to move before Mega Man will start running (which makes timing jumps from a standstill quite difficult at some points).

Overall, it's quite good, but it doesn't feel quite right if you know the NES versions by heart.

Actually, on second thought, the controls feel closer to the Game Boy versions than they do the NES, and it just occured to me that Wily Wars and the GB MM games share the same developer, Minakuchi Engineering, for whatever that observation is worth.
