How to Set the Time for the Rolex Datejust

Watch Chest presents a quick how-to video on how to set the Rolex Datejust (1985-present eras). You will learn the Datejust's anatomy and crown positions, as well as find out how to set the time, date, and manually wind the movement.

How To: Set the Rolex Datejust (Transcript)

To set your Datejust, we have the Hour Hand, Minute Hand, Second Hand, Date Window, and finally the winding crown. The winding crown has 4 positions, numbered from 0 to 3. Position 0 is fully closed and where the crown should be at all times if you are not setting your watch. Position 1 allows you to manually wind the movement; position 2 quickly sets the date; and position 3 manipulates the time.

First, unscrew the crown by rotating counterclockwise, where it will naturally pop out into the 1st position.

Gently pull the crown to the second position. Here you can rotate the crown to quickly change the date.

Pulling the crown out to the third and final position — where the second hand stops — you can now set the time. If you pass over midnight, the date will advance as well.

We find it more convenient to now return to position 2, rotating the crown whichever way to set the date.

Pushing the crown back into position 1, wind the crown 20 rotations to give the movement a manual charge; something you will need to do whenever you set the time or at least once a month for maintenance.

Make sure the winding crown in fully screwed closed; pushing it towards the case as you rotate it clockwise to ensure waterproofness.
