ALLOY WHEEL PROTECTION from corrosion and brake dust using silicone spray How to detailing DIY guide

Alloy wheel protection from corrosion and brake dust using silicone spray! How to car detailing DIY.

This how2everystep video shows you how I use silicone spray to protect alloy wheels from brake dust build up and corrosion.
After a wheel has been previously protected by silicone spray you can wipe your finger along the brake dust build up and it simply wipes away.
This is because the silicone spray forms a thin protective layer on top of the alloy wheel lacquer. The brake dust, road salt and dirt will sit on the outside surface of the silicone layer and prevent any debris actually sticking to the alloy wheel lacquer itself.
This means the wheels are significantly quicker and easier to clean – All brake dust and dirt simply wipes off with a wet microfibre cloth with no effort at all. Also the wheels will be protected from corrosion as the road salts and air will not come into contact with the alloy wheel’s surface.

Every Step Summary:
Step 1: Remove alloy wheel from the car
Step 2: Deep clean the alloy wheel
Step 3: Dry the alloy wheel
Step 4: Silicone spray the alloy wheel
Step 5: Silicone wipe the alloy wheel

Tools / Materials Required:
1: Microfibre cloths
2: Silicone spray
3: Towel
4: Jet wash & hose
5: PPE: safety glasses, respirator mask

Every Step in detail:
Step 1: Remove the alloy wheel from the car.
Remove the alloy wheel from the car so that you are able to wash, clean and protect the entire wheels exterior surface i.e. the front and the back
Step 2: Deep clean the alloy wheel.
Give the alloy wheel a good jet wash inside and out including the tyre – in particular the side walls.
Give a thorough wipe with a micro fibre cloth until all the debris is removed.
The idea being to wash away all brake dust, road salt and dirt so that when the silicone spray is applied the protective layer is put on the clean alloy wheel surface.
If there is baked on….
Step 3: Dry the alloy wheel
Fully dry the alloy wheel and tyre side walls with a towel
The water will tend to collect where the tyre bead meets the alloy wheel rim so ensure to dry this area.
Then go over the alloy wheel and tyre wall with a clean microfibre cloth to completely dry the wheel.
Step 4: Silicone spray the alloy wheel
First give the silicone spray bottle a good shake.
Use the silicone spray in a well-ventilated area and wear a respirator face mask.

Spray the entire wheel surface with silicone spray. On the front and back of the wheel.
Imagine you are spray painting the wheel – to help cover all of the wheel’s surface
Spray all around wheel rim where it meets the tyre bead to cover the outside edge of the wheel rim.
The silicone spray also makes a good tyre shine so you might as well spray the tyre side walls.
Important Note – do not to spray the tread part of the tyre as this would reduce tyre grip – because silicone spray is a lubricant.
Step 5: Silicone wipe the alloy wheel
Cut a piece of microfibre cloth approximately 60mm x 60mm. The idea being behind the size of the piece of microfibre cloth is that it will be big enough to hold and wipe the alloy rim and spokes but also small enough that it can be fully saturated with silicone.
Spray the piece of microfibre cloth with silicone spray until it is fully saturated.
Then wipe all of the alloy wheel surface with the saturated microfibre cloth.
The aim is to apply more silicone to the alloy wheel’s surface rather than wipe off silicone already on the alloy wheel, so you will need to keep spraying the microfibre cloth to keep it well saturated with silicone.
Also, for tyre shining use the saturated microfibre cloth to wipe silicone carefully on the side walls just up to the start of the tread, as you can be a lot more accurate when applying with the cloth than when spraying.
