Hello, this is a book review by Darn Pretty Smile. You can find me online at DaniellePSmith.com
Today’s book is “Kindred” by Octavia E. Butler. It was first published in 1979, again in 1988, and I read the 2003 print.
A friend had told me about the concept and when I found the book out in the wild, I was pretty excited. I read this in just over a week and just flew through it, really held my interest.
The main concept of the story is that a black woman from the 1970s somehow gets transported back to the antebellum South to save a white slave owner, every time he gets in trouble.
The book is simply written, straight forward style, it’s not extra flowery or heavily constructed. It’s a unique idea, and something I think of as historical science fiction.
I thought the juxtaposition of the 1970s was interesting not only when compared to the antebellum south, but being read from a 2020 standpoint to get a glimpse at race relations in the 1970s and what we almost take for granted today.
The characters that were presented to us felt fleshed out, well-constructed, and insightful. The concept that who we are is oftentimes because of our situation, which is not always just.
This book is a good reminder of our nation’s roots and how it’s really not that far back. I think anyone with a sense of empathy or social justice would be impacted by this book. I would think that anyone who needs to re-evaluate a currently sheltered world view might benefit from this book. It’s too easy to think that the past is the past, but it defines us and needs to be acknowledged.
I really enjoyed the time spent reading “Kindred” and found the topic important and the story well-written and would recommend it.
