MWC Brainstorming Chapters for your Book
Episode one for Military Writers Club on How to BRAINSTORM your story for writing a book. Sitting down with my Dad one day I wrote down 101 chapters for my book Tanker Pilot: Lessons from the Cockpit. I wrote 53 chapters and 22 of those chapters were in the final printing of the book.
A few things for BRAINSTORMING:
1. Write down your ideas in a notebook. I filled a three section spiral notebook. This process gets all your thoughts out of your head.
2. Your Elementary School teacher was right… outline EVERY chapter even if you don’t think it will be in the final printed book. Outlining my chapters on a White Board in a local library or University Study Room was invaluable to me! Other stories and events came to mind during this process.
3. Once you feel the chapter outline is pretty tight on the White Board, take a picture of it in your phone! Every chapter of my book had a picture of the outline I did at the library or study room. If I updated the chapter outline I took another picture of it.
4. Google The Heroes Two Journeys and study it: Here is a link to Michael Hauge and Chris Vogler’s screenwriting article:

Here is Chris Vogler’s YouTube explanation of what the Heroes Two Journeys is:

One last book I recommend to all my writers is Matt Bird’s the Secrets of Story found here:
https://www.amazon.com/Secrets-Story-Innovative-Perfecting-Captivating/dp/1440348235
Using The Heroes Two Journeys concept and Matt Bird’s book were invaluable to me when writing my manuscript. Your book is actually a screenplay. Approaching the writing journey with the idea your book is going to be made into a movie!
