The Origami Breakthrough Making Drones Crash-Resilient

What if the secret to safer drones was hidden in ancient paper folding?
Scientists at Imperial College London’s Aerial Robotics Lab developed Rotorigami — a rotary origami protective system designed to absorb impact without affecting flight performance. Published in Science Robotics, this innovation uses a Miura-ori–inspired folded plastic structure mounted on a rotating inner frame to protect drone propellers during collisions.
Unlike rigid guards, Rotorigami rotates with the drone and absorbs side-on impacts, reducing force, preventing uncontrolled spinning, and helping the drone stay upright after hitting obstacles. That means fewer crashes and more mission success.
This matters because drones often fail to detect thin wires, glass windows, and tight indoor spaces. Instead of relying only on obstacle-avoidance software, this system adds physical resilience — inspired by insects that combine sensing with structural protection.
From search-and-rescue operations to rainforest navigation and medical supply delivery, this breakthrough represents the future of soft, impact-resilient aerial robots.
