Bell Ringing at Bratton, Wiltshire

Bratton is a small village in Wiltshire, near Westbury. The small medieval parish church of St James is a magnificent little building whose small size is amplified by the quality of the building work. The tall tower holds an 11-1-3cwt ring of six in G. The front three were cast in 1896 and 1897 respectively by Mears and Stainbank, with the larger three being older bells. The 4th was cast in 1793 by Thomas and James Bilbie, the 5th cast in 1858 by George Mears and finally the tenor was cast in 1617 by John Wallis. Overall, they are rather agricultural sounding, but blend together very well. Personally, I really like them! Unfortunately, the headstock of the 5th has been cracked for a few years now and is unringable.
