Why do cats walk over their own paw prints?

If you watch a cat walk, you’ll notice that its back foot always lands exactly where the front foot just stepped. But why. This unique way of walking is called direct registering, and it’s a movement common to cats and other members of the cat family. With direct registering, the front foot checks for any potential danger in a spot, and the back foot follows, keeping the cat safe. Not only does this make the cat more secure, but it also reduces unnecessary effort, saving energy. Plus, since the back foot doesn’t leave a new footprint, it helps minimize noise. This behavior is key for stealthy hunting. Big cats like tigers who are apex predators have taken this trait to the next level, making them even more efficient and quieter hunters.
