Digging pad foundations & pouring concrete

Here we dig out the pads for the foundations - these are 3 pads which sit on each corner and in the middle of the area being extended.

Between each of the pads will sit some reinforced concrete lintels that support the weight of the bricks above them.

This system works well for a number of reasons; you can build right up to the edge of the foundation which is not typically possible on a trench fill (where you build in the middle).

You also save a bit of time and money on the concrete required for a trench fill system. This becomes especially true where you have a lot of trees on site nearby or if the ground is poor quality and the Building Inspector stipulates that you need to dig down 2 or 2.4 meters instead of 1...on a full trench, that can result in a vast amount more concrete and earth removal, on a pad it is not nearly as bad.
