Social security beneficiaries, including those on SSI and SSDI have been receiving automatic cost of living adjustments based on inflation over the past several decades; however, since 2000, there has reportedly been a 36% loss of buying power due to inadequate COLAs given to social security beneficiaries. To fix this change and raise payments for social security, as well as make future increases higher, lawmakers have proposed different pieces of legislation, which we detail in this video. These pieces of legislation are aimed to increase payments for social security beneficiaries, and ensure that future COLAs keep up with the pace of inflation that seniors pay for.
