Details:
In this video I restored an old rusty ratchet - made by the german company "Kampmann". When i received the ratchet it was pretty rusty and the chrome plating was halfway gone. It didnt move or work, so i had to restore this rusty ratchet. I started with disassembling the ratchet and took the 5 parts apart.
I started with restoring the bit inlay. It was too damaged so i made a new one from an old rusty piece of metal. I put it on the lathe and turned the perfect fitting shape on the outside, the bit hole was filed. The filing work took about 3 hours. After the part was done, i gave it a cold bluing finish: i cleaned the part with acetone, cold blued it, washed off the residue in destilled water and layed it in cold brewed linseed oil for around 24 hours. The next step was reshaping the bolt of the rusty ratchet. I turned it on the lathe to an working diameter of 7,95mm, cleaned and cold blued it. I put this part in the linseed oil aswell. The screw got cold blued aswell and the spring got cleaned. The next step was mirror polishing the ratchets main body. To achieve a mirror polishing finish, I started with sandblasting the rusty ratchet in the sandblasting cabinet. The result was okay but not good enough, since there was plating left. So i put the rusty ratchet in a bath of distilled water and 30% hydrochloric acid to loosen the remaining chrome plating. After around 30 minutes in the hydrochloric acid the plating was loosened and i was able to brush the plating away with my wirebrush. That was pretty easy, the rusty ratchet was clean now and i could see all the defects in the metal. So I started restoring the rusty ratchet with filing away the defects. After the most defects were gone, i started sanding with sanding. My sanding setup was 60 - 5000 grit. When i finished sanding with 1000 grit, i switched to wet sanding the metal from 1500 - 5000 grit. When the sanding was done, i was able to gave the ratchet a mirror finish by polishing it to mirror shine on the bench grinder. The mirror polishing turned out awesome and I finished the restoration of the rusty ratchet by cold bluing the inner areas. A little car wax to protect it from rust and were good to got. The final test shows, that this mirror polished ratchet easily pushes up to 50 lbs ft / 75 Nm.

Thanks for watching!
