Hampi was the stronghold of Vijayanagara empire which ruled from the 14th to the 16th century. By 1500 CE, Hampi-Vijayanagara was the world's second-largest medieval-era city after Beijing, and probably India's richest at that time.

The site is spread over 40 square kilometres on the banks of the river Tungabhadra and is carpeted in ancient stones of varying sizes, shapes, and colours. The landscape is a fascinating example of nature’s art. It’s as if the stones have crafted a story just for you.
