Everyone knows that New York is a melting pot; people from all over the world have brought unique aspects of their homelands to the city, as seen in fashion, design, cultural events, language and heritage. The best part about all this influence, however, is the food! From Chinatown to Curry Hill, New York restaurants offer flavors and cuisines from around the world. Those who want a taste of rustic Italy, and also an authentic lifestyle experience to accompany it, need look no further than Salumeria Rosi on the Upper West Side. It was opened in 2008 by the Rosi family, who for the past 30 plus years have owned and operated Panacotto in Parma, a company producing artisanal quality cured meats. Partnering with chef Cesare Casella, they created this specialty foods shop and tiny restaurant that brings the delicious meats, cheeses and accompaniments of old-world Italy right to the heart of the city. Done in rich wood tones, the relaxed dining room evokes the ambience of a contemporary Osteria. Small plates like Costina (spicy Tuscan spare ribs) and Acciughe Marinate (marinated anchovies) are accompanied by a robust Italian wine list. But, the best way to indulge at Salumeri Rossi, is just as the Italians would: at the meat counter. Proscuitto, pancetta, sausages, salami, speck, mortadella --- if you can pronounce it (or even if you cant), youll be able to try it here and take it home. The knowledgeable and jovial counter staff complete the experience, sharing tastes of the offerings and tidbits of advice.
