How To Make Lead From Scratch - Pioneer ways of making lead metal

Lead is important, so I am starting a new series on lead. We will talk about making lead from scratch, recycling lead materials, and prospecting for lead ores. Lots of uses have gone away, but Lead is still widely used for car batteries, pigments, ammunition, cable sheathing, weights for diving and other purposes, lead crystal glass, radiation protection and in some solders. Some manufacturers from China, India, and Mexico seem to like to use it as filler in things, including children’s candy. Lead has been used in cosmetics, paint, solder, plumbing pipes, gasoline, printing type, roofing, wheel weights, etc. A few of these remain and so it’s hard to get lead these days. Because of its density and ability to absorb vibration, lead also makes an excellent shield against different types of harmful radiation, such as those found in X-ray machines and nuclear reactors. Regulatory types consider it toxic and politicians think you should not be able to own lead. There used to be loads of sources of lead out there for who want to make their own ammunition re-loading, diving weights, etc. Unfortunately, you can’t just buy a bucket of wheel weights anymore in most places. Sometimes recovering and screening out fired bullets is sometimes possible but it’s a lot of work and not always possible. Small scale recycling from car batteries is dangerous because of soluble lead and acids. So now it can be useful to develop a new source for lead – by making your own.
