Shooting The Jewel of the Nile in Morocco was a massive logistics challenge for cast and crew.
And getting to interview actor and producer, Michael Douglas, son of movie legend Kirk Douglas, on the set of The Jewel of the Nile, proved slightly more difficult than I’d anticipated.
It was 1984, I’d flown in from the Cannes Film Festival to the city of Fez in the Kingdom of Morocco, in North Africa.
At customs I produced my relatively new NEC laptop computer, little realizing that the concept of portable computers back then was totally unfamiliar to customs guards.
In rapid-fire French they demanded to know what it was. In my stumbling Franglais I tried to explain it was like a typewriter. No joy there.
In moments, an armed guard marched me out of the queue, and I was pushed into a tiny cell and the steel door slammed behind me.
After what seemed like an eternity, but in reality was about two hours, I was released into the hands of the movie production people.
A day later, sipping coffee in a hotel café, I asked Michael if they’d had any problems organizing the arrival of cast and crew from all over the world, as well as equipment including a fighter- jet, guns, horses and trucks?
Michael’s hands-on experience as both an actor and producer clearly played a major role in the successful planning and production of The Jewel of The Nile, a wonderfully entertaining romp.
