A Drone Over the Orphanage | Elephant, Giraffe, Zebra and Khanyisa

Join us this Africa Day, as we explore HERD's beautiful surroundings from a view kept for the birds of the wilderness.

This drone footage captured by Jabulani Safari General Manager, Stefan du Toit, begins by showing our very own Bana Grass plantation, which provides an excellent source of nutrition for elephants. We then get a glimpse of the beautiful protected private reserve on which HERD is situated, moving on to the HERD orphanage and stables. View just some of the many wild animals that we are privileged to share this space with - including the zebra and giraffe. The reserve is home to the Big 5 - buffalo, wild elephants, lion, leopard and rhino, but when surrounded by the Jabulani herd each day walking in the bush, our carers are always protected by the elephants who will chase away predators or alert the human herd to the scent of animals nearby.

Our team are all very experienced in living in this wilderness, and sharing our home with roaming antelope and big cats, and know how to get along harmoniously with them, by not threatening them and knowing when to back away. The Jabulani herd are good at protecting themselves and little ones like Khanyisa too, enabling all the wildlife to benefit from shared waterholes and vegetation. The cycles of life are very much present in this wilderness area and not always easy to stomach, but such is nature and living with her, we are constantly in awe of Mother Africa's ability to achieve balance and to provide for her creatures, big and small.

The land we live on, here, is deeply and inexplicably engrained in the lives of all who dwell on it. Africa herself runs through us, embedded in our DNA, our history and present, our hearts, and our souls. Our heritage is made up of the scenes you see here, our wildlife is a source of life, jobs, empowerment and pride, and our wild spaces truly some of the last few on Earth.

On Africa Day 2021, we look forward to a positive future for conservation on the continent, as we continue to dedicate each day to caring for our home. It is because of the victories of our conversation champions and the ability of people across diverse backgrounds and cultures to come together that we have been able to protect wild spaces and wildlife, and all the things that make us Africa.
