Shoulder Dystocia During Delivery

OB_A_1059
This 3D animation of a delivery depicts how shoulder dystocia is caused and ways to prevent the problem. The infant is shown in the womb above the mother's vertebrae and behind the pelvic bones. With contractions, maternal pushing and vacuum suction the infant progresses outward until the head crowns. Various methods to prevent shoulder dystocia are depicted: midline episiotomy, McRoberts position, Wood's maneuver, and rotational maneuver. The infant could not be delivered, so the infant was pushed back into the birth canal (Zavanelli procedure) to prepare for a cesarean section.
