One of the first things I built for the van was a pull-out bed. I haven’t shown it yet, because I’m working on the interior of the van, but I will be doing a video on it at a later date. The bed sits over the left side wheel arch, which supports it nicely, and with a couple of inches of foam mattress on top, it’s a very comfortable bed indeed. However if you want to sit up on the bed and use it as a seat, then your head is very nearly touching the ceiling. If I had filled in between the beams, then it would have become impossible to sit up without having your head at an angle. Using thin, but effective, Thermawrap foil bubble-wrap insulation, I was able to give the metal ceiling a layer of insulation without compromising on head room. The plywood used was only 3.6mm, which saved on space again. This had the two added benefit of being flexible enough to match the curve of the van ceiling from left to right, as well as being much lighter than stripwood, tongue-and-groove or large sheet timber.

Once the van was prepared, my first step was to insulate the ceiling and I attached the foil insulation using Trimfix High temperature contact adhesive. This will be great, come summer, when the van gets really hot in the sun, as Trimfix can withstand heat of up to 120 degrees. In the beams, I sprayed expanding foam insulation to fill the cavities and prevent condensation in hidden spaces. Next, I carpeted the 3 beams to give them a soft, smart finish; the carpet also acts as an insulator. Having cut 4 ply panels to size, I screwed them onto a lowered lip on the edge of the beams with 4.2mm self-drilling metal screws. These were short enough to get a strong hold without piercing through the actual ceiling.
