Avoid These Drum Shells (If You Want To Install Drum Triggers)
Acoustic drums come in all shapes and sizes, there are so many shell variations out that. Inevitably you'll come across certain types of shells that just don't work great with internal or external drum triggers. This is a list of shells to avoid so you don't have to struggle like I did.
(these shells are not impossible to convert, they just work best with alternate trigger types)
1. Shallow Shells. Sometimes a piccolo snare is so short, that it makes internal triggers impossible to install. You'll have to go with external drum triggers in that case.
2. Shells with Screw Threads that stick into the shell. Many times drum triggers have a very thin gap that is only wide enough for the screws. My Sonor Force 2001 snare has it's threads intruding into the shell itself. Most of my internal triggers just don't fit that setup.
3. Shells with deep indentations. This could be a pressed internal band, or large hand hammered dents. What you want is a shell that is even surface that you can mount drum triggers to, or maybe with indentation that presses outward, not inward.
4. Look for shells with two screws per side if you have a bar trigger. This helps avoid a spinning bar trigger. This may only be a problem with metal shells.
5. If you are looking to purchase clip on triggers, avoid shells with large wood hoops.
