Polish Tango 1946: Mieczysław Fogg - I cóż zostało mi... [It's What's Been Left For Me...]
Mieczysław Fogg & Ork. W. Kabalewskiego [W. Kabalewski’s Band] - I cóż zostało mi [It’s What's Been Left For Me] Tango (Gillowa-Fischatter) Fogg-Record, 1945 (Polish)
NOTE: After the Second World War, Poland was hugely devastated, its capital was in ruins, as were many other cities, 12 million of its pre-war citizens disappeared, half of its territory was in the USSR and the rest under the control of the Stalinist regime. However, Poles tried to rebuild their semi-free existence including Mieczysław Fogg, one of the most popular pre-war Polish pop singers, who founded the Fogg-Records label in 1945. He installed it in his Warsaw flat (miraculously saved in an unbombed part of Warsaw). Curtains and blankets hung on the walls, the dining room in Fogg's flat served as a recording studio, and a portable Telefunken device, given to Fogg by his friend, the pre-war conductor Iwo Wesby (whom Fogg hid in his flat during the Holocaust years), was used for recordings. A few phone calls were all it took to summon a makeshift band made up of a few musicians available in the ruined city and labelled the 'W. Kabalewski Dance Orchestra'. Fogg-Records operated successfully for several years until it was closed down by the regime in 1951. The photo show includes several images of Poland coming back to life in the post-war months.
