How to change oil on a 1995 Mercedes Benz E320 wagon.

First step is I run the car for a few minutes to warm the oil and make sure I get dirt in the pan fully suspended in the oil. Then I pull the car onto some DIY ramps I made a while back using 2"x10" lumber. The ramps give me approximately 4.5" of additional clearance to operate under the car.

Next I open the hood all the way up to where sticks straight up and then slide under the car to remove the plastic skid plate held in place with 8mm and 10mm bolts. I like to use a large piece of cardboard which makes sliding under the car easier.

Then I remove the oil pan drain plug (13mm) and begin what is typically a 30 minute drain. I am in no hurry, I want gravity to remove as much of the dirty oil as possible. Along with changing the oil and filter at routine intervals this helps reduce undue wear. Remove the oil fill cap as the oil is draining.

While the oil is draining I work to remove the oil filter plastic cap using a special socket (see link below) and long 3/8" drive extention. Once the cap is loose unscrew it by hand until you can pull it straight up and out. Have a rag handy, the filter will likely be attached to the cap and may drip a bitof dirty oil.

With your replacement filter there should be a new O-ring for the filter cap, remove the old O-ring and replace it with the new one.

Swap in the new filter, thread it in by hand, and then using the filter socket, snug it up. Do not over-tighten (the cap is plastic).

When the oil is full drained, replace the oil pan drain plug with a new crush washer, and refill with new oil.

Oil capacity with a new filter:
7.9 Quarts (7.5 liters)
My car generally reads full on the dipstick at around 7.5 quarts

Replace the plastic skid plate and you are done!
