Food in Ekkamai, Bangkok - Coffee & Papaya Salad Fails
So there are many glowing reviews around about Ekkamai's 'Ink & Lion Cafe' and 'Sabai Jai' restaurant. This video shows my experiences on a busy Saturday evening in Early June 2015.
Ink & Lion Cafe - This place is set back from the main road so would be hard to find if you were just passing by. I ordered a flat white coffee and a chocolate rum cake.
The coffee took about 10 minutes to make (with no other customers in the store), so it wasn't a good start. It was also served in a glass with no handle, very annoying if you don't have asbestos hands. However, it looked nice and presentable when served so I was optimistic.
My hopes were dashed on the first sip with a harsh, overpowering, bitter aftertaste. This can be from:
- Over extracting the coffee
- Using water that is too hot
- Using the wrong grind size
- Dirty equipment
Unfortunately I couldn't finish the drink. The cake was quite nice, although a bit small.
I found the overall atmosphere a bit pretentious and stuffy (also wtf with the music). There was an art exhibition near the back of the store and the staff were not very welcoming.
Verdict: Stick to Coffee Club near the bts, it may be average but at least it's drinkable.
Sabai Jai Restaurant - One of my favourite meals in Thailand is Papaya Salad (Thai style), Grilled Chicken and Sticky Rice. This place seems to always be busy whenever I pass so I thought I'd try it out.
No staff greeted me upon entering (bad sign), but this is Thailand and it's a down to earth restaurant so I just made my way to the nearest clean table which had a fan blowing. I ordered my dishes and the waiter guy kept repeating a 'little bit spicy' for my papaya salad. I told him 3 times in Thai and English for 'Thai normal style' and 'can eat spicy' but he insisted in bringing me a westernised version which was terribly sour and inedible.
The Chicken looked like roadkill but tasted ok so was passable. Leo beer and sticky rice were standard.
I think this place does do good papaya salad but the order was messed up. They had some nice looking beer girls too, and a girl singing karaoke in the back. I would go back again but only with Thai friends.
