Q.Why was Bengal partitioned in 1905? /6
Firstly, Bengal was partitioned due to geographical reasons. It was the largest province of India with a population of 54 million in West Bengal and 31 million in East Bengal. Therefore, It was too huge to govern as one unit.so Lord Curzon partitioned it into East and West in order to overcome the difficulties faced in administering such a large province so that it could be governed and administered effectively and efficiently.
Secondly, it was partitioned due to political reasons. The British realized that the Muslims of Bengal were oppressed by the Hindu majority in Bengal and in the past, Hindus had gained advantages from the British whereas the Muslims were mistreated due to their resistance to British culture and ideas. So, to gain the support of the Muslims, where the Muslims would be majority and enjoy freedom/recognition, the British partitioned them.
Thirdly, the British wanted to counter the 'Congress threat as Congress had its strongest support from Bengal. Hindus were in majority in Bengal and nationalism was on the rise. For example, Bal Gangadhar Tilak, who pressed for self government and freedom of Indians. Hence, the British partitioned Bengal before the Hindus got too powerful.
Lastly, Bengal was close to the coastal area, the Bay of Bengal, due to which it was hit by frequent floods resulting in infrastructural damage. There were often delays in providing relief and rehabilitation or re-construction. So, by dividing the province into 2 wings, the 2 governments’administrations would quickly restore life and order in the areas.
