Obama lashed by left-wing Democrats after criticising ‘defund the police’ slogan

Former US President Barack Obama has been lashed by New York Congresswoman Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez and Democratic Representative Ilhan Omar after criticising the "snappy" slogan “defund the police”.

The former president was speaking on a Snapchat political show when he said, “you can use a snappy slogan like ‘defund the police’ but you know you’ve lost a big audience the moment you say it.”

“Which makes it a lot less likely that you’re actually going to get the changes that you want done,” Mr Obama said.

AOC and Ilhan Omar were among multiple progressive minds who lashed the former president on Twitter, with Ms Omar saying defund the police is “not a slogan but a policy demand”.

Sky News host Paul Murray commented on the issue, saying “Obama is apparently not woke enough for current members of the Democratic Party”.

“It feels like the squad have got more power than Obama, even though Obama is former president – all the rest of it.”
