Donegal Quilters - 1982

Dungloe women who have been making patchwork quilts and covers look to turn their pastime into a business.

Donegal women Rose Boyle, Mary Newport and Breege Gallagher learned the art of patchwork quilt making at a weekend course last year, and on arriving home to Dungloe decided that they would keep it up.

At home full time with families they produce patchwork quilts and cushion covers, financed with loans from their housekeeping money.

The Cathedral Windows pattern used by Rose Boyle is inspired by the beauty of stained glass windows and made with washable materials, sewn by hand whenever she gets some time to herself,

You can sit by the fire in your spare time and do it.

Recognising that there is a small business in the making, more quilting volunteers have been recruited in the nearby town of Burtonport, but the biggest issue is a space where they can market and sell their wares.

Economics aside, the craft of quilting is something anyone can take up and there is the benefit of recognising one’s innate creativity says Mary Newport,

To create something which is artistic and which is very satisfying.

News report broadcast on 23 February 1982.
