Florida Government Tells Courts That School Libraries Are To Spread 'Government's Message'

The attorney general of Florida admitted this week that they believe the function of school libraries is just to "convey the government's message." This argument was used as justification for the book bans in the state that are being challenged in court. In case you didn't realize it, their argument is authoritarianism, plain and simple, and it certainly isn't one that is going to win in court. Ring of Fire's Farron Cousins discusses this.

The state of Florida went totally mask off this week with their authoritarianism. When Republican Attorney General of Florida, Ashley Moody filed a motion in court in response to lawsuits that are actually two different lawsuits, uh, seeking to overturn the state's book bans. But Ashley Moody, state Republican Attorney General told the country in this court filing that quote, public school systems, including their libraries, convey the government's message. The argument is also being made by lawyers for the school boards in Escambia and Lake Counties. So according to Ashley Moody Public Schools, their libraries, their job is not to, not to educate. It's not to teach people. Their job is to convey the government's message.

That ladies and gentlemen is textbook authoritarianism, if, of course, that's what Ashley Moody meant. Now, there's a bit of a gray area here, and I wanna talk about that for a minute because let's read that statement one more time. Public school systems, including their library, convey the government's message. So we have to look at the meaning of what she's saying, and there's two possible meanings. The first one is that full blown authoritarianism, right? That, hey, it is the job of public schools to convey the government's message, or, and this is important because I think a lot of the stories talking about this, actually none of the stories I've seen talking about this have mentioned this. There's another part of it, and we have to be careful of this. She could be talking about the fact that because they are a government entity, whatever they say is basically them conveying the government's message. Those are two very conflicting and different statements. But if we look at the context, if we look at what Ron DeSantis has done here in the state of Florida, we know that the guy has really embraced authoritarianism. So this is slightly open to interpretation. We're gonna have to wait and see what they actually say out loud during the lawsuits before we can make a final judgment on whether or not Moody is in fact endorsing authoritarianism or if she's just really bad at choosing her words.
