Schefflera bonsai pruning and repotting || Getting rid of mealy bugs & hard water stains from leaves
I had recently bought a Schefflera plant from a local nursery. I thought it would make a great bonsai tree due to the nice trunk formation and the aerial roots.
The plant was kept aside for a while and when I picked it up I noticed that it had mealy bug infestation on it. I spent some time and removed the mealy bugs with q-tip dipped in a solution of water and alcohol in 7:1 ratio. Then I proceeded to prune and repot the plant as a bonsai tree.
I also removed the hard water stains from the leaves using a solution of white vinegar and water.
Below are the components of the soil mix ( with Amazon buying links) :
coco peat - https://amzn.to/2QG3z2o
sand - https://amzn.to/3sEbScr
charcoal - https://amzn.to/3tDWSwt
compost - https://amzn.to/3tHhiVs
pumice - https://amzn.to/3sFL7UO
lava rock - https://amzn.to/3at50Is
fired clay pellets - LECA - https://amzn.to/32ysqI9
pine bark - https://amzn.to/3tF8bnZ
The 3 key factors to be kept in mind while making a bonsai soil mix are
-aeration
-drainage
-moisture retention
I used copper wire to tie the tree to the pot and also to train some of the branches.
Schefflera is a fairly easy to grow plant and make excellent bonsai trees due to their trunk formation and aerial roots.
They do well with indirect light and generous amount of watering in a well drained soil.
