Cardio and weight lifting often don't play nice together - or at least that's the commonly held belief. The 'interference principle' teaches us that we can't train in more than one modality without losing some progress in each. In other words: cardio burns muscle and muscle makes us quick-to-tire.

But what if we want to be muscular and lean? Strong but fit?

Are there other options that will allow you to increase endurance and burn fat while still making gains in muscle size and power?

Here I look at a few options, including my favourite: metabolic resistance training. This way, you can turn a resistance routine *into a cardio circuit!

I also touch on using HIIT finishes, resistance cardio (battle ropes, kettlebell swings) and 'cardio acceleration'. All of these methods can help you to burn fat, tone up and improve your VO2 max while still staying muscular and strong!
