The idea of a 'training program' is something we have seen in countless fiction: from the X-Men's Danger Room, to the awesome training scene in The Matrix.

And it's easy to see the appeal. Training is all about preparing us for real-life combat and competition but very often it bares little resemblance to a real life-or-death situation.

Imagine if your workouts involved fighting oponents, jumping across ravines, dodging lazers and generally taking part in your very own actions scenes. Imagine how much more fun, engaging and challenging that could be.

So just how far are we from this kind of training? Well, there's a little way to go. While the Oculus Rift and HTV Vive are no doubt awesome tools for gaming and can bring us much closer to the action (which will have some benefits for our reflexes, attention etc.), they still keep us tethered and encumbered.

The big innovation is just around the corner though: inside out tracking using computer vision and machine learning in order to track our movements even without the use of external sensors.

If we then combine this with other advancements such as better hand tracking, then many more virtual training options start to open up. But there are still limitations such as feedback, resistance and impact. I discuss all that and more in the video!
