BAD NEWS: Chase Changes Who is Eligible to Earn the Sapphire Reserve’s 125,000 Bonus #travelhacking

Hey, I’m Leen with Leen on Travel and I wanted to update you all on a horrible change within Chase’s new application portal with the new Chase Sapphire Reserve card. This card just got released late June 2025, and travel hackers discovered that we could earn the sign up bonus even though we have earned the Sapphire Preferred’s signup bonus within the past 4 years. But… something happened in the past week and a half. And it’s not good. Us travel hackers have all been reporting that Chase is telling us we are no longer eligible to earn the Reserve’s signup bonus. Which sucks because that elevated offer just got better in the last 2 days, which is now at 125,000 points with the signup bonus. Although what's nice is we are being told this before Chase runs a credit check. But it just stinks. Especially for those of us who in the past couple of weeks have downgraded our Preferred card to apply for the Reserve. I really wanted the Reserve to replace my Venture X, due to the Reserve giving me 2 free guests at Priority Pass and Sapphire Airport lounges. So now, the next 2 best options would either be getting a Venture X for my husband, and just paying for access for my kid. OR getting the Citi Strata Elite card. Your choice will probably depend on if American Airlines miles through the Citi, or Capital One miles, are better for your travel hacking plans.
