Is the US naval blockade at the Strait of Hormuz directed against Iran, or against China?

Iran had already been restricting access to the strait, giving preferential rates to countries such as China and Russia, accepting payment in yuan. This helped consolidate China’s influence while weakening the dollar’s supremacy.

Now, the US seeks to reverse it. Following unsuccessful negotiations, the US has now initiated its own blockade against ships approaching Iranian ports. Despite claiming to be “neutral”, it affects China, which purchases most Iranian oil. Before February, some 140 ships sailed through. Only 17 crossed during the negotiations. Since imposing the blockade, the US military has seized several tankers.

Why is it important? Roughly one-third of China’s oil transits the Strait. Blocking it would mean putting pressure on the competing economic power directly. And as a result, we all have to put up with higher prices and inflation.
