alleyways é uma música sobre a infância do jesse rutherford e de um amigo dele chamado brandon, que é gestor da banda. o jesse relata que, para ele, era mais fácil ser criança do que entrar para o mundo da música. na letra, ele fala sobre o amor que ele tem pela infância e o desejo de nunca ter envelhecido. ele também fala que sua principal influência é ele mesmo, pois começou sua carreira cedo, numa banda que tinha quando ainda era adolescente (a qual também tinha o brandon na formação), mas essa banda, no entanto, acabou dando errado, e por isso ele diz "ainda estar testando sua sorte" numa banda nova, que, no caso, é o the neighbourhood.
