Why is INDONESIA moving its CAPITAL CITY? - VisualPolitik EN

Indonesia is the birthplace of the most corrupted politician in history (according to Transparency International). For decades, this country was sitting on a pile of natural wealth but the benefits for exploiting this went straight to the pockets of a political elite that became millionaire. This explains the lack of infrastructure in a country with more than 17.000 small islands. Having not so many docks, roads and airports, the Indonesian population has been concentrated on one island—Java—and, more specifically, on the capitol city: Jakarta.
Today, Jakarta’s metropolitan area is one of the World’s largest but, still, a big share of the population has no access to clean water and the absence of public transport leads to horrendous traffic jams. The whole city is sinking under the water due to no modern water-control systems. And this is why Indonesia’s president, Joko Widodo, has a plan: move the political institutions to another place. In other words: change the capital.
Widodo has a record of transparency and fight against corruption. Since he took office, the country has started an ambitious infrastructure plan. Among his achievements, we can find the brand new Jakarta’s metro, that was finished in summer 2019.
But building a brand new capital city from the scratch is much more expensive than all of this. It is an enormous investment and a big time challenge for Widodo’s administration. Can he get the money he needs to do this? Is Indonesia able to attract foreign investment to make this happen? Shall they need some political and economical reforms to do this? We will answer to all of this questions on this video.
