Let’s fix the news. Together!

Despite being neighbors and having very similar political systems, China and Vietnam are not exactly allies. In the 1970s they even had an open war. During the 1980s, China imposed trade sanctions on Vietnam. And it wasn't until well into the 1990s that these countries resumed amicable relations.

However, in the last five years, this friendship has been deteriorating. The tension between these two countries has reached the point of launching cyber-attacks against each other. China has even sunk Vietnamese fishing boats. The reason is a territorial dispute over control of small coral islands in the South China Sea.

In the midst of this dispute, Vietnam has found a surprising new ally: the United States. While Washington was Hanoi's worst enemy in the 1960s, today, it may be its greatest ally. But how can the tables have turned so dramatically? Why aren’t China and Vietnam getting along? Are these islands really so important? In this VisualPolitik video, we tell you the whole story.
