The impossible tax treaty between Georgia and the USA

Today we have a very interesting topic for you guys, and it is about one very bizarre situation regarding a tax treaty between the US and the country of Georgia.

This treaty is unique because it is only one way. America considers this tax treaty to be in place, while Georgia considers it nonexistent!
Even though it sounds bizarre, this may be an interesting opportunity for Americans when it comes to doing business abroad.

We know that tax treaties can be very useful for international tax planning. They can come in handy for many reasons, even if they don’t make much sense like this one!

This tax treaty was written in the 70s, while Georgia was still a part of the Soviet Union. At the time tax treaties were a relatively new phenomenon. Over time they evolved and became way more complex.

If you look at tax treaties on the Georgian side you will not be able to find a treaty with the USA. However, this treaty exists on the US side, and it is thanks to the Soviet heritage that this treaty is still considered active.
