[Laborem Exercens] Chapter 4 - Rights of Workers

An audio presentation of the Fourth Chapter of Pope St. John-Paul II 1981 Encyclical Laborem Exercens: On Human Work commemorating the 90th anniversary of Leo XIII's Rerum Novarum.

In this Chapter, JP II Outlines some of the basic rights of workers that governments and companies need to respect, including enabling or making opportunities for work. In the final analysis, these rights are to preserve the workers from merely becoming part of the production process. While these terms are not used in his writings, we can easily come to understand how such language as "Human Capital" or "Human Resources" already subsumes the worker and minimizes them to be merely an asset that is used in the production process. Work and economy exist for the sake of the worker. Workers to not exist for the sake of building or converting capital.

Returning to John-Paul II "philosophy of work" helps provide a roadmap of what we should ponder as we enter a new world where work is increasingly not done by human beings.
