Mapping the universe to trace the history of its expansion | Cosmic Flow 1/3

Since the beginning of time, man has never stopped looking further. After the explorers of the XVIth century, the cosmologists of the XXIst century sail on the "celestial waves" enriching, in the course of their missions, a dizzying cartography. These curious travelers, at the forefront of technology, have for vessels terrestrial or space telescopes ever more powerful and spectacular, pushing back ever further the limits of our knowledge and giving substance to our dream of infinity. From Hawaii to Australia, via South Africa and China, we embark on an incredible human and scientific adventure to the greatest sites of exploration of the Cosmos on the planet and to the discovery of new challenges on the understanding of the universe. A breathtaking journey on earth and in space!

Man's desire to explore extended into space. Maps were drawn, corrected as science progressed. These new travelers have for vessels terrestrial or space telescopes always more powerful, which push further the limits of knowledge. Astrophysicist Hélène Courtois and her international team of astronomers are among these new explorers. In 2014, while working on a new map of space, they succeeded in mapping for the first time the galactic supercluster, Laniakea, in which the Milky Way is located, thus revealing with unprecedented precision the Earth's position in the cosmos.
The first step of the mapping is to define as precisely as possible the position of the galaxies, thus measuring their distance, their distance from us. To calculate these distances from the brightness of the galaxies, the amount of light that we receive. The light power is necessary to determine its brightness. Our astrophysicists use the tool of the Canada-France-Hawaii Telescope (CFHT) to determine the distances of galaxies. A whole new geography is revealed to us, a geography of infinity, with undefined borders in perpetual motion. Mapping the universe is to face objects in movement sometimes still unknown, a gigantic challenge facing this universe in perpetual expansion.
