What is Centripetal Force? Centripetal Acceleration | Centripetal and Centrifugal Force

This lecture is about Centripetal force, Centrifugal force and Centripetal acceleration. You will learn the concepts of centripetal acceleration, Centripetal force and centrifugal force.

Q: What is Centripetal force?
Ans: The force which compels any body to move in a circular motion is known as Centripetal force. Centripetal force is also known as center seeking force.
For example, When a body moves along a circular track, there is force acting on the body towards center; this force is known as Centripetal force.

Q: What is centripetal acceleration?
Ans: Centripetal acceleration is the acceleration produced by a centripetal force towards the center. One can say that whenever a body experiences centripetal force, this centripetal force will produce centripetal acceleration in a body.
For example, The earth is revolving around the sun. Now the gravitational force between the earth and the sun also acts as centripetal force and compel the earth to accelerate towards the center of the sun. This inward or center seeking acceleration of the earth is known as centripetal force.
Centripetal acceleration depends on the radius of the circle and velocity of the body on a circular track.

Q: How can we calculate centripetal force?
Ans: We can calculate centripetal force on a body by using the formula of the centripetal force. The formula of centripetal force is equal to the product of mass into square of velocity divided by radius.
For example, the mass of an object is 10Kg , the radius in which this mass is rotating is 5m and the velocity of the mass is 4m/s.
Now we can easily calculate the centripetal force on mass by using the formula of centripetal force. As a result, we will get centripetal force on mass as 32 Newton.

Q: What is centrifugal force?
Ans: As we know that centripetal force is center seeking force or force that compel an object to move in a circular path. When an object move in circular motion, there exists another outward force on the object. This outward force on an object is known as centrifugal force.
